The Rock Church “St. Panteleimon” Near Mihalich – In the Heart of the Rock and Faith
Located 3 kilometers southeast of the village of Mihalich, in the locality known as “Aipando” (St. Panteleimon), lies one of Southeastern Bulgaria’s most intriguing and spiritually resonant rock sanctuaries.
Carved into a natural rocky terrace, the church dates back to the 10th–11th centuries and captivates visitors with its distinct architecture and ascetic atmosphere.
Access to the temple is via 14 stone steps hewn directly into the rock, leading through an open corridor flanked by nearly vertical sides.
The corridor starts at about 2 meters in width and gradually widens to 5 meters toward the interior. Two semicircular niches, resembling windows, are carved into its walls, adding to the sanctuary’s contemplative character.
Architecture and Interior Space
The entire church is carved directly into the rock, and despite the roughly shaped walls, it features the structure of a true three-domed building. Its layout follows a distinctly cruciform plan, typical of ecclesiastical architecture from the period.
The two side conches measure 4 meters in depth and 3.60 meters in width, while the eastern concha is approximately 4 by 4 meters. A notable architectural detail is the widened section on the right-hand side of the eastern concha, likely caused by a natural rock outcrop – possibly the result of an earthquake or moisture damage.
This breach was later reinforced with a wall built from rubble.
At the base of the apse stands a stone altar, measuring 0.80 meters in height and 0.85 meters in width at its center. The floor remains the natural rock, now covered with a thin layer of soil.
Dome and Symbolism
At the center of the church stands a carved dome measuring 5.5 meters in diameter and 6 meters in height from the floor. Although it lacks traditional pendentives or corbels, the craftsmen skillfully created the illusion of structural support through carved niches and projecting spurs flanking the eastern concha. These features resemble pilaster capitals and are positioned 2.60 meters high, giving the impression that the dome is upheld by columns.
In the corner between the eastern and left conches, a relief cross with broad arms – approximately 30 cm in height – is carved into the rock, reinforcing the site’s profound spiritual mission.

Historical Significance and Recognition
The Rock Church of St. Panteleimon is the work of hermit monks and reflects the broader ascetic and spiritual movement of its era. Similar sanctuaries found near Lake Van in eastern Turkey reveal the cultural and religious interconnections of the time.
In 1968, the church was declared a monument of national importance, affirming its enduring value in Bulgaria’s historical and architectural heritage.
